Is international experience relevant for the translation industry?

Yes, international experience can be highly relevant in the translation industry for several reasons:

  1. Cultural Insight: Translation goes beyond converting words from one language to another. It involves understanding cultural nuances, idioms, and societal norms. Having international experience can help translators be more sensitive to these subtleties, producing translations that are culturally appropriate and contextually accurate. This adds to the localization and adds substance to the message, attracting people and potential clients who seek this insight.
  2. Language Proficiency: Living or working in a country where the target language is spoken improves fluency and understanding of regional dialects, slang, and evolving language trends. This leads to higher-quality translations because certain idioms and expressions are used in specific countries and understanding them and transmitting them correctly gives more meaning to the language being portrayed.
  3. Industry-Specific Knowledge: If the translator has worked in a specific sector internationally (like legal, medical, or technical fields), they will better understand the jargon and industry-specific terminology required for accurate translations. This is very important because each field has its own jargon, which are special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand, and getting this right is essential for the reader to comprehend the subject or topic being addressed. 
  4. Networking Opportunities: International exposure opens up opportunities to build relationships with clients, agencies, and professionals from around the world, which can expand job prospects and enhance credibility in the field. I have experienced this in my field in the railway industry where I have furthered my work by providing written, consecutive and simultaneous translations participating in events and in the field with ‘hands-on’ experience. It is critically important not only for professional activities, but also for volunteering purposes in which we can give back to society part of that which we have received. 
  5. Global Mindset: Understanding how different cultures conduct business and communicate can give translators an edge in providing tailored solutions for international clients and projects. This is particularly important when dealing with people because when you understand the importance of culture and what it means to people, this can make a whole difference in the relationship always prospecting future opportunities. Remember, you are dealing with people who make decisions to hire your services, and also who can recommend your services to others.

I believe that international experience certainly adds value and enhances a translator’s capabilities. As a translator, I always believe that we make should do our best to provide services that will please the client to continue seeking our services or recommending our work to others in a perpetual cycle.
